Louise Williams is the Managing Director of Fayers Plumbing and Building Supplies and serves as the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) Regional Chair for London and the South East. With a career spanning over two decades across sales, operations, and leadership in the building materials industry, Louise is known for her people-first approach, commitment to inclusivity, and passion for driving growth and collaboration across the sector.
Can you share your career journey so far?
My career began in recruitment, but during the 2008 financial crisis I found myself at a crossroads. That challenge led me to pivot into sales with a leading cubicle manufacturing group. Over seven years, I worked my way up from Sales Rep to Sales Team Leader, then Operations Manager for the Group’s Export Division, and later Commercial Director for one of their start-up brands.
The work ethic and leadership experience I gained paved the way for my next chapter at Alsford Timber, where I spent nine and a half years as Commercial Director. Alongside this role, I was proud to be asked to take up the position of BMF Regional Chair for London and the South East – the first female to be appointed – a role I continue to hold today.
Most recently, I’ve stepped into the role of Managing Director at Fayers Plumbing and Building Supplies, where I’m excited to lead the business through its next phase of growth, while continuing to champion excellence and inclusivity across our industry.
What drew you to the building materials sector?
Like many people, I didn’t set out with a clear aim of joining the industry, but I quickly discovered it was the right fit for me. It’s a sector full of variety, energy, and challenge. I love the work-hard, play-hard mentality, and this industry has allowed me to make such strong connections across merchants, suppliers and manufacturers that I’ve made life-long friends while doing my job – how lucky am I?!
What advice has shaped your leadership style? Did you have mentors along the way?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to always be yourself (from my mum), and remember that your team is everything (from a previous manager).
We are all at our best when we are truly ourselves. This industry allows people to be who they really are – just turn up with the right attitude, work hard, speak honestly, and enjoy plenty of fun along the way!
I’ve always said that the greatest accolade as a leader is to see your team move on to bigger roles – something I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing many times. Anyone in a senior position today must lead from the front, not manage from above – working closely with colleagues, developing them as individuals, and creating a team ethos that’s second to none.
I’ve had one formal mentor so far in my career, but I’ve learnt so much from so many people along the way. I’m fortunate to have a network full of industry greats who are always on hand to offer advice when needed.
What are some of the challenges and opportunities in this sector?
Aside from market conditions, leading teams across multiple sites can be a challenge. Colleagues face more pressures both inside and outside of work than ever before, so it’s vital they feel supported to manage the unique challenges at each location.
The real challenge in any business is bringing colleagues on the journey with you – aligning everyone behind a shared vision. That vision doesn’t need to be complicated, but it should resonate across every role in the business, allowing each individual to understand their contribution to success.
The opportunities in our industry are huge. With the right attitude, there’s no limit to where you can go – from front-line branch roles to office-based positions in finance, IT, purchasing, HR, marketing, and sales. It’s an industry with space for everyone – all backgrounds, skills, and ambitions are welcome.
How has the industry evolved during your career?
The most positive shift has been in diversity. Compared to when I started, there are now more women and young people entering the sector, and the industry is more inclusive overall. Progress is ongoing, but it’s inspiring to see meaningful change taking root.
What qualities do you look for when building a team?
I place huge importance on team fit with skills, experience, and qualifications following on in that order. Drive, enthusiasm, reliability, resilience, and a sense of humour all matter in a fast-moving environment. You can train someone to do the job, but you can’t teach those qualities.
What’s next for you in your career?
Stepping into the Managing Director role at Fayers marks an exciting new chapter. I’m passionate about building on the company’s strong foundations, fostering collaboration across teams, and driving continued success for both colleagues and customers.
What message would you share with women starting out in this industry?
This is a sector full of opportunity so don’t hesitate to step into it. You’ll need to work hard, but you’ll meet incredible people and build a rewarding career.
Above all, be yourself. If a company or role doesn’t allow you to do that, don’t be afraid to find one that does. Work is a huge part of life – you deserve to be in an environment where you feel valued and empowered.
