Looking Ahead to 2026: A Personal Perspective

By Stephanie Beaumont

By Michael Parry, Managing Director, GCS Associates

As we move into 2026, I find myself reflecting not just on the state of the construction supplies and building materials sector, but on the conversations we’re having every day with clients, candidates and colleagues across the industry. There’s no doubt the challenges remain, but there’s also a real sense of optimism and momentum as businesses look ahead with greater clarity and confidence.

Over the past year, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: adaptability is now a fundamental part of doing business. Market conditions continue to evolve, and the organisations that are thriving are those willing to be flexible, open to change and proactive in how they plan for the future.

Putting People First

If there’s one constant that underpins everything we do, it’s people. As we head into 2026, the conversation has shifted from simply recruiting to building strong, sustainable teams. More businesses are thinking carefully about succession planning, leadership development and how they support people throughout their careers, not just at the point of hire.

Retention, culture and engagement are now just as important as attraction. Creating environments where people feel valued, supported and clear about their future is quickly becoming a key differentiator across the sector.

Leadership in a Changing Market

Leadership remains a recurring theme in many of our discussions. The most effective leaders I speak to aren’t necessarily those with all the answers, but those who communicate clearly, bring people with them and remain calm during periods of uncertainty.

In 2026, I expect leadership capability to continue playing a central role in how businesses navigate change, particularly as teams become more diverse and expectations around flexibility and development continue to grow.

The Value of Insight and Conversation

Another encouraging trend is the increasing appetite for insight and open discussion. Whether through market reports, industry events or informal conversations, there’s a growing recognition that sharing knowledge helps everyone make better decisions.

Staying connected across the industry, learning from one another and challenging thinking where necessary will remain vital as we move forward.

Looking Ahead

2026 will undoubtedly bring new challenges, but it also brings opportunity. For those willing to invest in people, think long term and remain open to change, there is a great deal to be positive about.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank everyone we’ve worked with over the past year, clients, candidates and industry partners alike, for the trust, openness and conversations that continue to shape what we do at GCS Associates. As we move into 2026, I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead and look forward to continuing the journey together.
