GCS Associates were delighted to attend and present at this year’s BMF HR Forum, held at the Builders Merchants Federation Head Office in Coventry. The event brought together senior HR professionals, business leaders, and industry experts from across the building materials sector to explore the theme “Future-Proofing Your Workforce.”
The Builders Merchants Federation continues to lead the way in supporting its members through professional development, networking, and industry insight events. The HR Forum was designed to tackle one of the most pressing challenges facing businesses today: how to attract, retain, and develop talent in an evolving marketplace.
The day began with an introduction from Louise Norman of Darlaston, followed by an update from BMF CEO John Newcomb, who shared the latest news and initiatives from the Federation. Attendees also heard from a variety of expert speakers covering topics such as employment law changes, generational workforce expectations, and the importance of engagement and retention in a competitive sector.
A key highlight of the afternoon was the session presented by David Hopkinson, Client Solutions Director at GCS Associates, titled “What Makes Employees Stay?” David delivered an insightful and thought-provoking talk that focused on the real factors driving employee retention within the building materials industry.
Drawing on GCS Associates’ extensive experience in recruitment and talent consultancy, David explored the importance of company culture, leadership communication, and clear career progression in building loyalty and reducing turnover. He also discussed the growing expectations of Millennials and Gen Z employees, highlighting how businesses can adapt to a new generation that values purpose, flexibility, and continuous development.
David’s presentation encouraged a lively discussion among delegates, many of whom shared their own experiences of workforce challenges and successes. Attendees reflected on how small changes in recognition, feedback, and opportunity can have a significant impact on long-term engagement.
Speaking after the event, David said:
“It was a real pleasure to speak at the BMF HR Forum and to be part of such an engaging and forward-thinking group of professionals. Employee retention has never been more important. The best organisations are those that truly invest in their people and create cultures where individuals feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow. At GCS Associates, we are passionate about helping businesses achieve that.”
The event concluded with a group workshop where attendees collaborated on engagement strategies and shared ideas on how to future-proof their own workforces.
The BMF HR Forum once again proved to be an invaluable platform for knowledge sharing and professional development within the building materials community. GCS Associates were proud to play a part in the conversation, contributing their expertise and continuing their support for the BMF’s ongoing commitment to developing people across the industry.
